In Ecclesiastes 3: 1-2.11, it says, “ To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die.” In verse 11 it says, “ He has made everything beautiful in its time…..” So we all have a finite time to live, no one will live forever.
The bible talks of two deaths. The first death is the cessation of mortal life. Meaning that your body dies, or your heart stops beating. The bible describes this death like a sleep in which you never physically wake up. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 says, “Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope….” Then there is the second type of death where your soul and spirit dies. Revelation 21:8 says, ”But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” The lake of fire which is also eternal separation from God is the second death.
So what is the origin of death, why do we die? The answer is disobedience.Genesis 2:16-17 says, ”And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” So man disobeyed God and ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and so became mortal.
Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. ” So it means the reward, consequence of sin is death, but remember not only physical death but spiritual death.
However glory to God in the highest, there is good news. We have power over death. 1 Corinthians 15:21-22 says ,“For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.” Hallelujah! We are made alive in Christ. Verse 55-57 says, “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. So, we need to confess our sins and ask God for forgiveness and by the power of Jesus we are saved. Ephesians 2: 8 says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.”
When a bee stings, it puts in poison or venom, which in large quantities can kill. In fact I had a relative who sadly died of multiple bee stings while driving in his car. Likewise the sting of satan is sin, sin is the poison that can kill. However Jesus took that bee sting and turned it to honey, made it sweet , and enjoyable. He overcame the enemy. We can now sing and say o death where is your sting, o grave where is your victory.
We have the power of death and we do not need to fear death, because physical death at God’s appointed time is only a transition to eternal life for those who obey and trust God. Wish you a blessed day.
