Hello Dear Listeners, welcome to overcoming temptations. My name is Oyisi Okatahi. Today our topic is titled: How to meet an important person. Our bible passage is taken from Proverbs 23: 1- 3. I read from the Good news translation. It says When you sit down to eat with someone important, keep in mind who he is. 2 If you have a big appetite, restrain yourself. 3 Don’t be greedy for the fine food he serves; he may be trying to trick you. The bible says when an important person invites you for a meal, he will serve you all kinds of varieties and drinks and he will say eat and be full. The bible says if you like food you should be careful because the rich man even though he presented plenty for you to eat, he does not expect you to eat everything but he expect you control yourself and eat a little. He is only testing to see if you are greedy.
So here are some practical steps that can make an important person like a political office holder, business tycoon or any important person approachable.
- Do not ask for anything. Majority of people who meet important people is to ask them for one favour or the other, when your relationship with an important person is just about asking, then the person will certainly avoid you. When you keep asking it shows that you are not really interested in the person but just in what you can get and since no one likes to be used, they will certainly avoid you.
- Carry along a gift and seek to add value. Many people think like- what can I buy for an important person after all he has all the money. That is a wrong way to think, everyone has need and what they like. The president of the United States Abraham Lincoln appreciated it when a woman baked cookies and brought for him to eat. Yes he could afford it but he appreciated the heart behind the gift even more than the gift, because it showed the woman was thoughtful of him. Your gift may be small but not easy to find, so try to meet a need in the life of an important person and they will like you. Everyone looks for value adding relationship and not just liabilities. Try and find out something in their life were they have a need see where you can fit in and help solve that need.
- Pray for God’s favour. There is something about favour, people like you just because they like you, they cannot even explain why themselves. When the King of Persia organized a beauty contest to choose a queen, the Bible said that as soon as he saw Esther she captivated him. She was not the most beautiful nor the most gorgeously dressed. However she had something the other girls did not have and that was Gods divine favour. So even if you are very intelligent, hardworking or attractive, an important person may not still be impressed with you. Favour matters also.
So when you have been able to add value to them and establish a relation, then naturally the important person will genuinely try to help you. So be wise. Have a blessed day.
